According to official statistics, from January to October 2017, Indonesia’s clothing exports rebounded due to the surge in demand in Asian markets such as Japan, South Korea and China, but demand in the US and EU markets has stagnated.

According to statistics, in October, Indonesia’s textile and clothing exports increased by 15.1% year-on-year, an increase of 18.3% and 3.8% compared with August and September respectively. From January to October, Indonesia’s cumulative exports of textiles and apparel (in US dollars) increased by 5.5% year-on-year, while it fell by 4.4% in the same period last year. The main reason for the increase in Indonesia’s textile and apparel exports is the sharp increase in export unit prices due to a sharp increase in labor costs.

It is understood that the main market for Indonesia’s textile and clothing exports is the United States, accounting for about 55% of Indonesia’s total textile and clothing exports. In the third quarter, due to the substantial increase in U.S. imports of Vietnamese clothing, U.S. imports of Indonesian textiles and clothing decreased by 4.5% year-on-year, while the total import volume remained stable. Currently, Indonesia’s market share of textiles and apparel in the United States is gradually shrinking, and it is the fourth largest supplier of U.S. textiles and apparel imports, accounting for 5% of the total U.S. textiles and apparel imports.

In the first quarter, Indonesia’s textile and clothing exports to Australia increased by 12% year-on-year, South Korea increased by 17.6% year-on-year, and China increased by 20% year-on-year. The focus of Indonesia’s clothing exports gradually shifted to the Asian market.

Japan is the second largest export destination country after the United States, accounting for about 10% of Indonesia’s total textile and apparel exports. This is mainly due to the duty-free trade agreement between Indonesia and Japan. It is expected that Indonesia will reach a duty-free trade agreement with Australia next year.
